End-of-day update in three lines

Close the day in three lines so the next time zone knows where things stand.

When you finish work, so the next time zone starts with it

The three lines

  1. Finished

    What did you finish today?

  2. Open

What did you leave open, and where is it?

  3. Watch out

What should the next person know? Leave empty if nothing.

Each line: 80 characters at most.

Copy the template

An example end-of-day update blip

  • Finished Fixed the login loop on Safari, deployed at 4pm

  • Watch out Staging database is being restored, do not run migrations

A written sample, not a real team's update.

Questions

What is an end-of-day update?

A short note written when you stop work. It tells teammates, often in another time zone, what is finished, what is still open and anything they should be careful with.

How is it different from a daily standup?

A standup looks forward from the start of your day. An end-of-day update looks back from the end of it, which suits handoffs between time zones.

Do I have to write it every day?

Only on days you worked on something a teammate might pick up or depend on. An update with nothing in it is noise.

tblip is in development. The template above works without it.
